📖 Member Story: How GreenSpace Changed Emma’s Life

Emma, 34, moved to London from Manchester in 2021. Working from home as a freelance designer, she found herself isolated and missing green space. She’d grown up helping her granddad on his allotment but didn’t think she’d ever have the space to garden in London.

“Finding GreenSpace was like finding a piece of home. I joined as a volunteer first – just turning up on Saturdays to help out. Everyone was so welcoming. I learned so much about organic growing, composting, seed saving. When a plot became available, I jumped at it. Now I grow most of my own vegetables from April to October. But honestly, it’s about so much more than the veg. I’ve made genuine friends. We share seeds, share problems, share recipes. On hard days, an hour at the garden sorts my head out. It’s become my community.”

What Emma gained from GreenSpace:

  • Own growing plot (secured after 22 months on waiting list)
  • Grows 60% of her own vegetables (saves £40-50/month)
  • New gardening skills (composting, seed saving, seasonal growing)
  • Strong community connections (regular social events)
  • Better mental health (“garden therapy”)
  • Access to tool library (saved £200+ on tools)

Emma now runs our monthly seed swap and helps new members get started.

🥕 Traditional Allotments

📏 Full plot: 250m² | Half plot: 125m² | 💰 £150/year (full) or £90/year (half)

  • Enough space to grow most of a family’s vegetables

Half plot (125m²):

  • Perfect for couples or small families
  • Manageable amount of work
  • Still enough space for variety
  • Requires 3-5 hours/week maintenance

Waiting list: Currently 2-3 years for full plot, 18-24 months for half plot

What’s included:

  • Secure plot with your own gate/lock
  • Water supply
  • Access to communal facilities
  • Green waste disposal
  • Tool library access

🤝 Volunteer Opportunities

📅 Tues, Thurs, Sat 10am-4pm | 🆓 Free – no membership needed | ☕ Tea & biscuits provided!

What volunteers do:

  • Maintain communal growing areas (herb garden, fruit trees, flower beds)
  • Composting and green waste management
  • Path maintenance and site tidying
  • Building projects (raised beds, benches, signs)

Why volunteer?

  • Learn gardening skills hands-on
  • Be part of the community (many volunteers eventually get plots)
  • Take home surplus produce (we share what we grow!)

  • Meet like-minded people
  • Priority on waiting list after 6 months regular volunteering

No experience needed! We’ll teach you everything. Turn up any Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday morning and we’ll find you something to do.

Common Questions

❓ I’ve never grown anything before – is that OK?

Absolutely! Lots of our members started as complete beginners. We have experienced growers who love sharing knowledge. Come to volunteer days to learn by doing, attend our beginner workshops, and ask questions anytime. Everyone’s really supportive.

❓ How long is the waiting list for a plot?

Currently 18-24 months for a small community plot (3m x 6m) and 2-3 years for a traditional allotment. However, if you volunteer regularly (6+ months), you get priority. Plots occasionally become available sooner if members leave.

❓ What if I join the waiting list then change my mind?

No problem at all. Just let us know. We’ll offer the plot to the next person. You can always rejoin the list later if circumstances change.

❓ Can I grow while I’m on the waiting list?

Yes! Members can use communal growing areas (raised beds by the entrance), help with community plots, and take part in everything else. You just won’t have your own dedicated plot yet.

❓ Do I have to volunteer?

No – volunteering is completely optional. Some members have plots and rarely volunteer. Others volunteer every week. It’s up to you and how much time you have. That said, volunteering is a great way to learn and meet people!

❓ Is the site secure? Will my stuff be safe?

The site has a lockable gate (members get the code). Allotment plots have individual lockable gates. We’ve had very few security issues. That said, don’t leave expensive tools out – use the tool library or take your own tools home.

❓ Can I bring my kids?

Yes! It’s a family-friendly space. Children must be supervised by an adult. We have a small play area, and kids love helping with digging, watering, and harvesting. Great way to teach them about food and nature.

❓ What about winter? Is it worth having a plot in winter?

Definitely! You can grow winter veg (kale, cabbage, leeks, Brussels sprouts, winter salads). Plus winter is when you prepare beds, spread compost, plan next year’s crops. Many members come year-round. It’s quieter but lovely in winter.

❓ I’m elderly/have mobility issues – can I still join?

Yes! We have some raised beds that are wheelchair accessible. Paths are relatively flat (though can be muddy in winter). Several members have mobility issues and manage fine. We also have a few benches if you need to rest. Let us know your needs and we’ll accommodate where possible.

❓ Can I bring my dog?

Yes, on a lead please. Dogs must be under control and cleaned up after. Most people bring dogs – it’s a very dog-friendly space. Just keep them away from growing areas.
